Dental into Medicare

Everyone has to go to the dentist sometimes. But dental’s not covered by Medicare, meaning millions of Australians struggle to access the care they need.

Each year, over 2 million Australians skip seeing the dentist because of the cost. This has consequences for our whole healthcare system. Regular dental check-ups are necessary to catch problems like tooth decay early, before they become serious. Without these check-ups, people end up in the hospital or the emergency room with life-threatening infections and other preventable conditions.

The lower your income, the more likely you are to live with chronic dental problems. Something as simple as untreated tooth decay can have a huge impact on your entire life. Luckily, there’s a way to fix this. By putting dental into Medicare, we could make sure that every Australian could access a dentist whenever they needed to - for free.

Last time the Greens were in the balance of power, we were able to win dental into Medicare for 3.4 million children - saving parents a fortune and making sure a generation of kids had healthy teeth. Now, we want to secure free dental care for everyone.

The Greens will:

  • Bring dental into Medicare, so everyone can go to the dentist for free.
  • Guarantee $1000 of free dental appointments every two years for all Australians
  • This will cost $5.8 billion, paid for by taxing Australia’s billionaires
