Australia is facing a housing crisis. Queensland alone has 50,000 people on the social housing waiting list, while more and more people are experiencing housing stress, and young people are increasingly priced out of the housing market. We have a shortfall of at least 500,000 affordable homes across Australia.
The Greens will make big banks, billionaires and mining corporations building 1,000,000 public and community homes over the next 15 years.
The Greens will:
- Establish a Federal Housing Trust to finance the construction of 1,000,000 public & community homes within 15 years
- Set rent for these new homes at 25% of income or market rent, whichever is lower
- Ensure the new homes are well-designed through establishing tenant and community design panels
- Create 25,000 jobs per year in the construction of public and community housing.
In addition, the Greens will fight for real rights for all renters. We will mandate long-term leases, end no grounds evictions, and cap rent rises, as well as providing $30 million for tenancy advocacy services, to help renters defend their rights.
